Ok, so I’ve never actually done it myself, but I saw it on another site, The Simple Dollar and thought it was a great idea!
Note: I would try this out on an item of clothing that you wouldn’t be too upset if it got ruined….. just to be sure!!
So, if you are up for the challenge, then it is a great way to save quite a bit of money since we all know that laundry detergent is expensive.
So, if you are so inclined, here is the recipe:
- 1 bar of soap (whatever kind you like)
- 1 box of washing soda
- A bucket that will hold more than 5 gallons or 15 liters
- 3 gallons of tap water
- optional: 1 box of borax (this is optional and if you do use it, it greatly improves the end product)
Steps To Making Your Own Laundry Detergent
Step 1: Finely grate your bar of soap
Step 2: Place water into a pot and heat it up till it is almost boiling.
Step 3: Gradually add your shavings of soap to the hot water, stirring constantly. What you want is very soapy water, so don’t add all your shavings at once.
Step 4: Put 2.5 gallons of hot water into your five gallon bucket.
Step 5: Add the soapy water from your pot on the stove and stir.
Step 6: Then add the washing soda, and if you are using it, the borax into the 5 gallon bucket.
Step 7: Keep stirring thoroughly until all powder is dissolved.
Optional step: you can add scented oils to the mixture if you want your detergent to have a fragrance.
Step 8: Leave your mixture overnight to cool with its lid on.
And you are done!
So, when you are next doing a load of laundry, add one eight oz. measuring cup of this mixture to it and it should work out to be the same as any detergent you would buy at the store.
