Financial Assistance For Single Mothers

by Sarah Palmer

Financial assistance programs are available from all levels of the government, as well as private organizations. So, if you are a single mother in need of financial assistance, help is out there, you just need to know where to find it. Often however, you need to meet certain criteria to qualify for the financial assistance.financial assistance for single mothers 150x150 Financial Assistance For Single Mothers

Are you qualified for financial assistance for single mothers?

To ensure that the most needy people get the funds, not everyone is entitled to the federal financial aid that is available. Only the people whose earnings fall below a certain limit qualify for the financial assistance for single mothers. Other factors are also considered – such as your family situation, current expenses etc. To find out if you qualify, complete an application form at your local welfare office.

If you do not qualify for welfare benefits, you can also take advantage of grants offered by the US government. In exchange for the grant, you must perform some service or task required by the grant terms. There are 900 grant programs offered by 26 federal grant-making agencies. You may visit http://www.grants.gov and http://www.neh.gov for details on grant application.

If you intend to go back to school, there are also grants available to assist with tuition costs. And unlike loans, grants do not have to be repaid. All you have to do is inquire at the school you wish to attend and find out if they have grants available.

Sources of Financial Assistance for Single Mothers

- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) – Otherwise known as welfare, TANF offers a combination of financial assistance and work opportunities. Each state has its own TANF program however the name of each program varies from state to state.

- WIC – Women, Infants & Children – WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children. WIC is a supplemental nutrition program available to low-income woman and/or their children. Find out whether you are eligible for WIC and how WIC may be able to help you with food costs.

- Programs to help single parent families avoid foreclosure – The Obama administration has recently made several refinancing and loan modification programs available to help families stay in their homes. If you’ve recently suffered a significant hardship–such a divorce or job loss, and your mortgage payment is more than 1/3 of your gross monthly income, you may be eligible for a loan modification through the Obama administration’s “Making Home Affordable” program. Also, it may be worthwhile contacting your lender to inquire whether they would consider modifying your existing loan. For example, lenders can assist homeowners by lowering interest rates, extending the terms of the loan, or by reducing the principal on the loan. In many situations, these types of accommodations are actually less costly to the bank than foreclosure proceedings.

- Our Families, Our Future – This organization is dedicated to providing a support and assistance to those who are trying to get back on their feet. They are a great organization that help train and mentor women for positions in the work force that will allow them to make a wage that can support themselves and take care of their children without needing help from the government or welfare programs. Find out more at www.ourfamiliesourfuture.org.

Hi – I am so sorry to hear of your situation.
Have you tried the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)? They are a great resource for housing assistance.
Good luck!!!

I have tried some those resources posted and most their internal links are “broken,” and some are grants for going back to school. I am not interested in going back to school, I am interested in help now, I need a place to live, transportation assistance, as well as childcare. I am employed but it does not meet the demand of all my bills and if i get another job, I might as well not have children. I live in Volusia County, Fl, do you know of anything to help. I have WIC, and not so much money in Food Stamps because I do have a job.

I live in Ohio and my husband passed away in Feb 2010. I need help in getting car insurance. I was in a car accident in June of 2009 and my license supended. I paid the fee to get my license back but need to travel to Toledo to get them. My car was towed by the police for driving while supended and I havent been able to get it out. Its been sitting in the lot since the end of October. Does anyone know of any insurance that will not cost much? I’m not working right now. I have a 15 yr old son and a 6 month old daughter and just cant afford child care. I recieve food stamps that isnt helpful and I get WIC and also social security. But this barely pays the bills. I’m at my wits end and dont know what to do? Taxis in my area cost alot to get anywhere and well friends can only help so much with rides. I’m desperate to get my car back. Please any help???

I need help fast! My husband and I have been separated for almost 2 months now. He was very verbally and emotionally abusive to both me and our 5 year old son. My son actually has mental problems because of the abuse and had to be put into a behavioral center for a short period. They diagnosed him with ADHD and ODD. He is on medication for the ADHD. He treats me the same way his dad treated us. Cursing at me and my mom, hitting us and is very defiant. My landlord is about to push us out of the house we live in. I have contacted the housing authority and they basically told me I had to wait until I received a letter in the mail. I am not sure how much longer our landlord will let us stay here. I do have a part time job, but I only get about 3 to 4 hours a night and I don’t make much. I also need a car because my husband took it when he left. If anyone knows of any organization I can turn to until I can get back on my feet, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

I AM DESPERATE, CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP. I AM 44 YRS OLD I HAVE BEEN MARRIED AND IN A N ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH MY HUSBAND , WE HAVE 2 BOYS TOGETHER AGES 8 & 10. i HAD BEEN OUT OF WORK FOR 2 YEARS AFTER HAVING SURGERY TO REMOVE A TUMOR ON MY LOWER BACK I HAD BEEN UNABLE TO FIND EMPLOYMENT. DURING THIS TIME I FOUND OUT MY HUSBAND WAS HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH SOMEONE HE WORKED WITH. THIS WAS DEVASTATING FOR ME BUT THE WORST PART IS THAT HE HAS CONVINCED ME THAT IT IS MY FAULT. HE YELLS AT ME AND CALLS ME HORRIBLE NAMES IN FRONT OF MY KIDS ONE TIME I TRIED TO STAND UP TO HIM HE GOT PHYSICAL AND MY KIDS WERE SO TEREFIED. MY 8 YERAR OLD USE TO BE AFRAID TO GO TO SCHOOL BECAUSE HE WAS AFRAID FOR ME. HE DEVELOPED A NERVOUS HABIT OF BITING HIS NAILS. I CANT PUT THEM OR MYSELF THROUGH THIS ANYMORE I FELT I COULDNT LEAVE BECAUSE I COULD NOT LEAVE WITH OUT THEM AND I COULD NOT SUPPORT THEM WITH NO JOB. MY HUSBAND SAYS IF I EVER LEAVE HE WOULD TAKE HIS BOYS TO MEXICO. AFTER ALOT OF HARD WORK I FINALLY GOT A JOB AND WAS PREPARING TO MAKE MY MOVE AND LEAVE THAT I DISCOVERED MY TWO FRONT TEETH HAVE BECOME SO LOOSE I CAN HARDLY EAT. i HAVE NO INSURANCE BUT MANAGED TO GET ENOUGH MONEY TOGETHER FOR AN OFFICE VISIT. THE WORST POSSIBLE NEWS DUE TO AN UNTREATED BROKEN TOOTH I HAD DEVELOPED AN INFECTION IN THE BONE OF MY UPPER JAW CAUSING THE TEETH TO SEPARATE FROM THE BONE. NOW THERE IS SO MUCH BONE LOSS THERE IS NO SAVING MY OWN TEETH AND W A S REFERRED TO AN IMPLANT SPECIALIST.
THE INITIAL CONSULTATION WAS FREE BUT MY TREATMENT PLAN FOR THE IMPLANTS IS 17,000 . IF I LOSE MY TEETH I WILL ALSO LOSE MY JOB. I HAVE NO MEANS TO PAY FOR THIS DENTAL WORK , AND WAS TOLD THIS TYPE OF INFECTION IF UNTREATED IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND CAN CAUSE OTHER SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS. I NOW HAVE A TUMOR GROWING ON MY LOWER BACK AND FEAR THIS COULD BE CANCER . I HAVE SCHEDULED SURGERY TO HAVE THE TUMOR REMOVED AND MEDI CAL WILL PAY. BUT I DESPERATELY NEED
TO FIND SOMEKIND OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR MEDICAL/DENTAL PROCEDURE SO THAT I CAN BETTER CARE FOR MY CHILDREN. I HAVE BAD CREDIT MOSTLY MEDICAL BILLS WHEN I HAD NO HEALTH INSURANCE. I
JUST WANT TO G ET HEALTHY SO I CAN TAKE CARE OF MY KIDS. WHAT CAN I DO? I AM OPEN TO ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS

I need help because I don’t know what to do. I’m 20 years old (will be 21 next week) and am expecting my first child in January. I live in Mississippi and I’m a licensed cosmetologist. I was recently fired from a corporate salon which had ridiculous rules and expectations that no one can live up to. I’ve applied for jobs and been told multiple times that I wasn’t eligible to be hired because I am pregnant and it is a liability. My boyfriend and I live together and he works but doesn’t make enough money to pay all of our bills. I just don’t know what to do. I’m scared and stressed out. Can someone please give me some advice? It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Lisa Selwyn November 10, 2011 at 3:51 am

I need prayers! My name is Lisa Selwyn, I was referred to you in hopes you could help me in this time of need or maybe you can point me in the direction of someone who can help me.

I am enrolled at Yankton Sioux Tribe.

I am a student at Sisseton Wahpeton College and previously attended Oglala Lakota College.

I have had a string of bad hardship this past month that has put all three of my children in the hospital. One was sent to Fargo North Dakota the other to Sioux Falls South Dakota, the youngest, my 15 mth old baby was later released just after a few days. I had to see my children in the hospitals and that put a strain on me financially. So now,my bills are all over due I am getting disconnection notices and possible eviction, also due to a broken curbside water valve; my water bill is $316.97 and is going to be diconnected-Noon-November,14th. I have tried to make payments over the months but they want the full amount paid and the valve fixed in which could be thousands of dollars. So I called them again today and asked them again if there was anything I can do to keep the water on, she once again said, pay the full amount and they won’t dig up the street to fix the valve and turn off the water.

If you can help in any way, please let me know, my water bill is paid to the City Hall, City of Sisseton 513 Veterans Avenue Sisseton SD 57262(ph#605-698-3391) my account is Lisa Selwyn # 0100010807010 my address is 306 E Walnut Sisseton South Dakota 57262

Thank you. for more information:

My husband has just started drinking and doing drugs again. I went onto this site to see if there were support resources available for me if I ask him to leave. Although he is verbally abusive and my son hates him, he doesn’t hit me. After reading all of these women’s desparate plights, maybe I better let him stay. At least that way my son will have a roof over his head, food, and running water. The odds of me surviving without him don’t look good. Oh well. Like they say dying is easy, i’s living that’s hard.

Loutica June 26, 2013 at 2:16 pm

I’m a 44 year old mom, my last child at home is 11. After leaving my husband that was mentally and verbally abusive.we movied back in with my mom and stepdad . We were told they wanted us to move out after my daughters school year was over. The only income we have is foodstamps. everything we own is in storage, which we are about to loose. Our phone is about to be shut off, I have no way to pay my bills nor money for gas to continue to look for a job. Since October of 2012,I have put in over 2,000 aplications and resumes. We need help, I was told by Greene County Ohio public assistance office, the only way I could get cash assistance was if I was to work 32 hours a week.. I dont know where to turn! Any help or advice would be more than appreciated! I’m not looking for a hand out, I just need a hand up.
