Emergency Housing Assistance for Single Mothers

Many single mothers can find themselves in a situation where they are needing some form of emergency housing assistance for themselves and their children. And unfortunately, in many situations, not all single parent families get sufficient warning when they are likely to be in need of housing, temporary or permanent. That is why there are emergency housing options available to single moms and their children.

Below are some emergency housing assistance programs for single mothers and their children:

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is a wonderful non-profit organization which helps many people who are in need in many different areas of their life. One of the main many areas of need is with housing and the Salvation Army provide group homes, emergency shelters, and also transitional living centers on a temporary basis anyone in need.

They also offer family service programs which help needy families who are in need of food, utility assistance, and other needs.

They are situated across the entire US country, so depending on which US state you live in, contact your local Salvation Army office to find out which services may be able to help.

YWCA

The YWCA is another wonderful organization which helps thousands of women who are in need. Their main area of focus is helping women who are victims of domestic violence and are the largest provider of women’s shelters and domestic violence services. The YWCA provide emergency domestic shelters, support groups as well as crisis hotlines for women and their children.

There is a local YWCA in each US state, so be sure to do a search for the YWCA in your area. For example, if you live in San Diego, the YWCA have Becky’s House. This is domestic violence program which provides 30 day emergency shelter and 18 month transitional living programs for women in need. If you are a victim of domestic violence, please do not hesitate to contact them.

St. Vincent de Paul

St. Vincent de Paul is another major charity organization which can help with emergency housing. In addition to emergency housing services to single mothers and her children, they also provide much needed assistance in the form of rental assistance, low-cost housing, shelters, clothing, food as well as victim services.

It is definitely worth contacting your local St. Vincent de Paul service center in your local area if you find yourself in need of any of the services they provide.

Other catholic charities and non-profit organizations

There are many other catholic charities and other non-profit organizations provide many services to single parent families. One of the main areas of assistance they provide is in emergency housing. Each charity differs from state to state, so depending on which state you live in, will depend on which organization you can contact.

For example, if you are a resident of Tampa, Florida, the Women’s Resource Center of Tampa may be able to help. The Women’s Resource Center of Tampa provide emergency food, clothes, housing, employment, transportation, training and access to other resources for not only single parent families, but homeless, elderly and disable people

HUD (Housing and Urban Development)

The HUD provide many different types of housing assistance for those in need. One of the areas they provide help with is with emergency shelters. So, contact your local HUD office to find out where the local shelter and emergency housing is located.

Overnight Shelters

The US Department of Health and Human Services (http://www.hhs.gov/) also provide overnight shelters if you need a place to sleep in an emergency. In addition to temporary housing, they also provide food and support services and if necessary, you are able to come back each night for a safe place to sleep for yourself and your children.

If you find yourself in the situation where you need emergency housing, don’t panic, there are many places for you to turn which provide a safe place for yourself and your children.
