The Reality Of Raising A Child – Where is the support?

by Sarah Palmer

These days, too many single moms are living from paycheck to paycheck. If you take a short survey of many single mothers out there, this is too often the case. For many single mothers, each paycheck is about survival for herself and her family.

With the cost of child care on the rise as well as living costs, single mothers are often at the mercy of their jobs and would be in real trouble if they were to ever lose their job.

But what happens when she or one of her children gets sick and she needs to take a day off?

In extreme cases, some single mothers may even lose their job if they have a sick day. In Miami-Dade County there is a proposal for sick leave pay. This is a proposal to the change in law to protect people who find themselves in this type of situation – where low income people cannot afford to not only lose a day’s pay for being sick, but also their job.

Reality is, these days, there should actually be a lot more community support than there really is. This would significantly reduce the financial and emotional burden that many single parent families are feeling and also reduce the worry about losing ones job.

Community support was how it was done in the old days – where, as the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. Unfortunately, these days are vastly different. Many small communities are trying their hardest to change that, but reality is, it is a culture which is very difficult to change.

There are also organizations out there which aim to reduce the financial burden for low income families, single parents or not. This is so that there can be a little bit of extra cash in these families pockets, which can often mean that the stress level in the house is significantly reduced. A little cash goes a long way in many of these families.

I just need some financial help to get me out of debt. I am currently three months behind on our mortgage and the bank will not help out. I have three children. I work 40 hours a week at a grocery store and after taxes I bring home $1652 a month. my mortgage is $ 1457 a month. my boyfriend just started a new job about six months ago and he brings home after taxes $ 1750 a month. He has very serious medical problem including but not limited to two strokes, tia’s ( multiple mini strokes ) and fainting spells. So for the past three and a half years we have been pretty much living off of my paychecks and using income returns to try to pay everything off. My two oldest children’s father owes me $44,000 in arrears and I have been waiting for the government to serve him with the contempt paperwork but I am not getting much about what’s going on with that. I need $ 5,000 to pay our mortgage up to date and then we will be on the right track financially. we have been playing catch up for so long and the stress from it all is finally starting to get to us both. I just need some help. We are very good people. we are very family oriented. We do not drink, do drugs or party. All of our free time ( when not at work ) is spent at home with our kids. Please give me any information you can on any organizations that help out in this way. Thank you very much.
